'Larry' Cruises in Red Cell Sunland Challenge

Distance champion earns return trip to Challenge Championships.

March 31, 2013

Last year’s champion distance horse All About Larry took the first step toward defending his title on Sunday as he rolled to a four-length victory in the $63,090 Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge (G3) at Sunland Park. With L. Salvador Martinez in the irons, the 6-year-old gelded son of Heza Motor Scooter battled for the lead from the rail post with DM Streakn Thru Fire and then drew clear to stop the timer at :44.122 for 870 yards as the 9-5 second choice in the betting. All About Larry earned $30,284 for owner Diane Heath and trainer John Stinebaugh.

All About Larry, who was bred in Arizona by Las Vegas Ranch, could only manage a fifth-place finish in last year’s Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge but was nearly unbeatable after that with four wins in his next five starts. That included a victory in the Red Cell Lone Star Distance Challenge and the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship (G1) in track record time at Prairie Meadows to wrap up his championship campaign. This latest victory earned him a berth to return to the Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship this fall at Los Alamitos Race Course in Southern California. All told, All About Larry has won 11 of 23 starts with a bankroll of $189,618.

Richard Sturdevant, Terry Wootan and Joe David Yates’ DM Streakn Thru Fire, a Walk Thru Fire gelding who was the even-money favorite after defeating All About Larry in the trials, crossed the wire second with Casey Lambert riding for trainer Mike Joiner. Jess A Traffic Jam, a 7-year-old gelding running for owners George and Judy Weldon, took third with Larry Gamez aboard for conditioner Blake Rust.
