G.S. Fikes’ Loves Brown Sugar takes a step up in class trying for her first stakes win and third-straight victory in the $20,000 Selma Stakes for fillies and mares over 350 yards on Friday night at Retama Park.

Loves Brown Sugar (Prime Talent-Loves Easter Bunny by Royal Shake Em) closed out her 2012 season with a win in a conditioned allowance race against fillies. She then returned after a six-month layoff to win an open allowance race by three-quarters of a length as the 9-5 favorite. She covered the 330 yards in :16.58 for trainer Kie Mushinski.

Jose Salazar’s veteran Bertha Venation (Corona Caliente-Dash To Glory by Texigo Star) will be dangerous after running a close second behind Sweet Oblivion in the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge in her most recent out. The winner of nine of 25 starts took a division of the Selma Stakes and the Merial Lone Star Distaff Challenge last year.

Jackie Sessions’ homebred Baby Wave (Wave Carver-Royal Baby Sitter by Royal Quick Dash) also fits well at level for trainer Judd Kearl. She won a Sam Houston allowance race two starts ago and then was third behind Sweet Oblivion and Bertha Venation in the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge.
