Martinez Hot in Firecrackers

Trainer Bobby Martinez has full hands in Firecracker Futurity and Derby.

Trainer Bobby Martinez is primed with the first- and third-fastest qualifiers to the $327,715 Firecracker Futurity (G2) and the top qualifier to the $144,065 Firecracker Derby on Saturday at Delta Downs.

Bobby Barnett’s homebred Shakem Little Corona (Tinys First Corona-Shakin Lil Oro by Royal Shake Em) pushed her record to 2-for-2 when she topped the Firecracker Futurity qualifiers. She raced to the half length win over second-fastest qualifier Ronnie James (Valiant Hero-Jess A Lil Bit by Feature Mr Jess). Shakem Lil Corona was timed in :17.332 for 350 yards. Ronnie James was clocked in :17.404 for his first setback after two wins for trainer Heath Taylor and breeder/owner Brett Mennen.

Martinez also saddles third-fastest qualifier Mr Einstein (Dashin Bye-Fast N Smooth 880 by Speedy Hemp). The Jorge Meraz-owned gelding broke his maiden with his trial win in :17.491, while making his second career start.

In the Firecracker Derby, Bobby Barnett and Tommy Hays’ Runaway Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Dashin Vike by Dashin Bye) raced to his second career win when he won the second of two trials in :19.454, while defeating fourth-fastest qualifier Surfin Waves (Ocean Runaway-Lady Dee Vee Em by Chicks Beduino) by a half length. The trial win was his first start since racing in the Evangeline Downs Futurity back in December.

Trainer Heath Taylor has three finalists, topped by second-fastest qualifier The Lizzard King (Valiant Hero-Jess A Lil Bit by Feature Mr Jess) He has this year won three of four starts, with a close second in the Sam Houston Derby (G3). He won his trial by 1 1/2 lengths in :19.523.

Taylor is also represented by seventh-fastest qualifier Triple Vodka (Tres Seis-Newport Lily by Stoli) and ninth-fastest qualifier Gold Rrrush (Corona Cartel-Jess A Lil Bit More by Mr Jess Perry).
