Lorenzo Cano’s My Big Chief became a stakes winner on Sunday when the gelding by Get Down Perry rolled to a 1 ½-length victory in the $68,603 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque. Adrian Ramos rode for trainer Gerardo Cano and stopped the timer at :19.286 for 400 yards.

My Big Chief set the fastest qualifying time in the trials and his victory in the final improved his record to 12-5-1-3 with earnings of $90,789. The gelding’s previous stakes experience includes a third-place finish in this year’s New Mexico HBA Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park. My Big Chief was bred by Chad McCallum out of the Major Rime mare Majorly Easy.

PK Bay, the second-fastest qualifier after losing by a nose to My Big Chief in the trials, finished second again in the final and increased his bankroll to nearly $200,000. Owner Lorenzo Cano and trainer Gerardo Cano also teamed on third-place finisher Lttle Lighting.
