New Look Heads Golden State Derby Trials

Sophomores ready for the Golden State Derby trials on Sunday.

August 10, 2012

Mimi Wells’ El Primero Del Ano Derby (G2) winner New Look will be joined by PCQHRA Breeders' Futurity (G2) winner Ima Chickie Two, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) runner-up Last To Fire and stakes winner Check My Thoughts for a pair of 400-yard trials to the Golden State Derby (G1) on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

The Golden State Derby final will be contested on Sunday, August 26, and will feature the horses with the 10 fastest times in the trials. Former Golden State Derby winners include Champion of Champions (G1) winners Good Reason SA, Blues Girl Too, Sgt Pepper Feature and Don Guerro. Other great runners to have won the Golden State Derby are One Famous Eagle, Separatist, Holland Ease, Florentine, Tolltac, and Easy Date, just to mention a few past greats.

Trained by Dan Francisco, New Look has been one of the big stars in the sophomore division this season. The son of Walk Thru Fire will be in action in the second division of the Golden State and he’s been a juggernaut in trial races this year. Bred by Ed Allred, New Look has won all three of his trial races this year and he’s had the fastest times leading into the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes and the El Primero Del Ano Derby. He also posted a solid half-length victory in his trial to the $217,500 Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2) on July 14. His biggest moment of the season so far was his victory in the $180,320 El Primero Del Ano Derby on April 7. The sorrel gelding broke on top in that race and then held off Los Alamitos Winter Derby hero Kobe in the final yards. Rodrigo Aceves will ride New Look from the outside Post 8.

The field to this trial will also feature Eaves and Kessinger’s Delight At Night, a highly talented filly, which exits a half-length allowance win last month while making her 2012 debut. Juan Aleman will saddle Delight At Night. The field for the second trial will also feature Do You Do Corona, who won a $13,000 overnight handicap here last September, and Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2) fifth place finisher Eye For FDD. BD Cruiser, who ran second to New Look in the El Primero trials, is also capable of a major victory from Post 1.

Last To Fire, Ima Chickie Two and Check My Thoughts will be the headliners in the first Golden State Derby trial. Racing for Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas, Last To Fire earned over half a million dollars last year thanks to his second place finish in the Los Alamitos Two Million and his third place result in the Golden State Million Futurity (G1). He was most impressive when qualifying to the Los Alamitos Two Million, as he scored a mesmerizing 3-length victory on that night.

Sired by Chicks Beduino, Ima Chickie Two had her share of memorable races in 2011, led by her victory in the $490,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on October 1. That victory marked the end of her 2-year-old season and upon her sophomore return she delivered a second place finish to Terrific Synergy in the Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2) on July 28. Ramon Sanchez will ride the S-Quarter K LLC owned filly.

Ed Allred’s Check My Thoughts has started eight times in his career and has hit the board in each outing. His record includes victories in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes (R) and Golden State Juvenile Stakes (R). He’s also finished behind Kobe in both the Holiday Handicap and Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1). Jimmy Glenn Jr. will saddle Check My Thoughts from Post 1.

Owners Jose and Gustavo De La Torre will be looking for a big race from Last To Check Him, who has yet to finish in the top three this season after running third in last year’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. One Famous Ferragamo is another one to watch in this trial following his second place finish to the talented Kool Million on July 28.
