In her first start since finishing sixth as the favorite in last year’s All American Futurity (G1), PJ Chick In Black scored a one-length win in a trial for the $65,000-added West Texas Derby (G3) on Friday at Sunland Park to set the fastest qualifying time. The New Mexico-bred daughter of Desirio, who runs for Jack Smith Farms, Susan Taylor and Dennis Bowen, clocked 400 yards in :18.841 with Esgar Ramirez up for trainer John Stinebaugh.
Last year PJ Chick In Black won five of six starts, including the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) and Ruidoso Futurity (G1). Her earnings now stand at $528,439.
Rockin J Running Horses and Jack Manning’s Rockin Disco, winner of the John Deere Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge (G3) last year, won the first of seven trials with the second-fastest qualifying time of :18.971. Alejandro Medellin rode for conditioner Mike Wakefield.
