March 30, 2013

Winning for the seventh time in eight career starts, champion PJ Chick In Black rolled to a one-length victory in Saturday’s $203,148 West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park. With regular pilot Esgar Ramirez aboard for conditioner John Stinebaugh, last year’s champion 2-year-old filly dashed 400 yards in :18.808 as the 4-5 favorite.

PJ Chick In Black, who runs for Dennis Bowen, Susan Taylor and Jack Smith Farms, kicked off her 3-year-old campaign in the West Texas trials with a similar one-length victory in :18.841 to set the fastest qualifying time. Last year the New Mexico-bred daughter of Desirio won the New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park and Ruidoso Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs. Her only defeat was a sixth-place finish as the favorite in the All American Futurity (G1). PJ Chick In Black, who was bred by Fredda Draper out of the Corona Cocktail mare Eddie Jym, figures to return to Ruidoso this summer to compete in the track’s three Grade 1 derbies: the Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American. Her earnings now stand at $623,919 after her West Texas win.

ICU Deity, a New Mexico-bred gelding by FDD Dynasty, got up to finish second as the second betting choice at odds of 6-1. Casey Lambert rode for trainer Mike Joiner, who co-owns ICU Deity with Marty Cope.

Mexas Racing Team’s Whiteface Eagle, a filly by One Famous Eagle, closed well to take third with Adrian Ramos up for trainer Jaime Aldavaz Jr.
