July 8, 2012
Owners Tommy Hays and Bobby Barnett picked up their second stakes victory of the weekend on Sunday as their Painted Sable scored a decisive victory in the $16,950 Hill Country Dash at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds in Texas. The race is part of the Bank of America Bonus Challenge presented by Markel.
On Saturday, Hays and Barnett scored in the $144,065 Firecracker Derby with Runaway Wagon, and at Gillespie it was another PYC Paint Your Wagon runner who picked up the victory. Painted Sable, a 4-year-old Utah-bred mare, took a commanding lead early in the 440-yard race and was never threatened before hitting the wire a length in front in :21.682, just off the track record of :21.601. Ricardo Aguirre rode for trainer Lewis “Tooter” Jordan.
This marked the first stakes victory for Painted Sable, who previously finished second in the Manor Downs Futurity (G1) and hit the board in three other stakes. She improved her record to 17-6-2-3 with earnings of $129,762. Max Anderson and Lance Robinson bred Painted Sable out of the Dash Thru Traffic mare Sables Dash, who is also the dam of stakes winner Mr Jess Dash, by Mr Jess Perry.
Sergio Maldonado’s Shake Em Special Pop, a three-time stakes winner by Royal Shake Em, came on late to finish second. Homes Huitron’s Streaky Baby finished third.
