Rebounding from a sixth-place finish last time out as the beaten favorite, Carlos Lozano’s Political Option returned to his winning ways with a dominant 1 ¾-length win in the $55,000 Delta 550 Championship for Louisiana-breds on Friday at Delta Downs. The 4-year-old gelding by Jess Louisiana Blue shattered the 550-yard track record of :26.481 when he put up a time of :26.266 to earn a 109 speed index under jockey Jesse Chavis. Kenneth Roberts Sr. was the winning trainer.

Except for a troubled sixth in the John Alleman Memorial Stakes (RG3) last month at Delta, Political Option has hit the board in eight starts dating back to April of last year. He picked up his first stakes win earlier this year in the Mr Jess Perry Louisiana Downs Stakes (R). Bred by J.E. Jumonville Jr. out of the Apollo (TB) mare In His Dreams, Political Option now has a record of 20-5-5-6 with earnings of $244,880.

Jess Louisiana Blue was also the sire of runner-up Blue Louisiana Jolla, an 8-year-old gelding who won the Delta 550 in 2011. The earner of $320,250 runs for owners Elroy Potts Jr. and Watson Land and Cattle and is conditioned by Elroy Potts Sr. Douglas Traylor’s Rocky Mountain Fly, a gelded son of Panther Mountain, closed for third.
