Stakes Dominate Hialeah Closing Day
Invitational Championship, Southern Florida Derby in race lineup.
February 13, 2013
Bill Price’s homebred BPS Jumpin Frisco is chasing his third-straight stakes win in the $75,000 Hialeah Invitational Championship and Jose Herrera’s fastest-qualifier Carverson in the $208,090 South Florida Derby close the Hialeah season Sunday afternoon on a card featuring four stakes races.
Also on the program are the $25,000 Sailfish Stakes and the $20,000 Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge.
BPS Jumpin Frisco (Jumpn-Frisco Fling by Dash For Cash) returns to 440 yards in the Hialeah Championship after racing to back-to-back stakes wins at much shorter distances. He won the $22,000 Tallahassee Stakes by a half length over 220 yards and then took the $22,000 Beautiful Prairie Stakes at 250 yards by a neck.
The quarter-mile distance of the Hialeah Championship should not be an issue for the 4-year-old gelding. Last summer at Ruidoso Downs, he won his trial to the 440-yard All American Derby (G1) and then had no chance in the finals after a terrible start.
Alicia Smith’s Feature My News (Feature Mr Jess-Goodnews Montanna by Dash Of Romance) looks for his fourth-straight win for trainer Matt Frazier. Feature My News won the QHRAI Derby at Hoosier Downs and then shipped to Hialeah to win his Hialeah Derby trial and then the $192,520 Derby at nearly 3-1 odds.
Jose Herrera’s Carverson (Wave Carver-Miss Razz Chick by Ronas Ryon) comes into a contentious South Florida Derby with two wins and a fourth-place run in the Hialeah Laddie Futurity from his three starts during the meet. He set the top derby qualifying time when he won the fourth of four trials by 1 length over second-fastest qualifier Mi Angela (Jet Black Patriot-Dashin Follies by Strawfly Special). He won the trial in :21.751 for 440 yards while Mi Angela was timed in :21.912.
Ted Abrams’ homebred Panther Speed (Panther Mountain-Shaded In Speed by Corona Cartel) has won two of three career starts. The Donnie Strickland-trained filly was a neck winner of her derby trial, with the third-fastest time of :21.914. Her only defeat came in the Hialeah Lassie Futurity when she was pinched back at the start and was never in contention.
In the 1,000-yard Sailfish Stakes, Robert Gentry’s homebred Airizon (Tale Of The Cat (TB)-Fearless Chick by Chicks Beduino) returns after a second-place run in the 660-yard Moonstone Stakes, her first start at more than 440 yards. The Matt Frazier-trained mare has been in the top-two finishers in four of seven starts at Hialeah. The well-bred mare should step forward after her first trip around a turn in the Moonstone.
In the 300-yard Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge, J. Garvan Kelly’s Shanachee (Country Chicks Man-Court Etiquette by Corona Cartel) shoots for her third-straight win after winning two $16,000 allowance races at Hialeah. The Charlton Hunt-trained mare was second in last year’s Iowa Double Gold Derby (R), beaten by just a neck.
