Andrew Smith’s Wicked Courage made his stakes debut a winning one as he captured the $95,000 Black Gold Division III Futurity (R) on Sunday afternoon at Will Rogers Downs. The Texas-bred son of Captain Courage prevailed by three-parts of a length as the 3-5 favorite. Cody Jensen rode for trainer Luis Villafranco and stopped the timer at :17.645 for 350 yards.

Wicked Courage, who was bred by Burnett Ranches LLC out of the Dash For Cash mare Wicked Pamela, broke his maiden in the trials with the second-fastest qualifying time. Earlier in the year he raced competitively in trials for the Grade 1 Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American Futurities. His record now stands at 7-2-2-2 with earnings of $45,511.

Wicked Courage became the second stakes winner sired by freshman stallion Captain Courage, a Grade 1-placed son of Mr Jess Perry and half brother to leading sire Corona Cartel out of champion Corona Chick.

Tyler Graham’s Baby Witch, a Shazoom filly sent off as the longest shot in the field at odds of 39-1, put in a game effort to take second. Another big longshot, Slew Of Success by Cartel Success, took third at odds of 33-1 for owners Lloyd and Toni Yother.
