AQHA Select World Show 2015

2012 Select World

Aged Stallions

After a three-year hiatus, Heza Stemwinder returns for gold.

Heza Stemwinder went out on top back in 2009 – the 2007 chestnut stallion captured both the open and the amateur 2-year-old stallions world championships at the AQHA World Championship Show.

In the three years since then, the son of Ima Mr Cool Skip has been producing babies – his 11 point earners have earned 178.5 points combined. Owner Dr. Gigi Wood Davis has not only enjoyed showing the 5-year-old stallion, but also a few of his offspring, including Hes Some Winder, who placed third on August 27 in weanling stallions at the 2012 Adequan Select World Championship Show.

Several classes later, Gigi took the shank of Heza Stemwinder, pulling the stallion out of retirement and back into the limelight.

“We haven’t shown him in two years and just decided to bring him back out and let everybody see him and have fun,” Gigi said with a smile following her win with Heza Stemwinder in aged stallions. In the years that he’s been in the breeding shed, Heza Stemwinder has grown and improved, and that’s something Gigi and her husband, Greg, wanted to show mare owners.

And the Davises have certainly been impressed with the babies Heza Stemwinder has sired.

“All of them have beautiful faces and most of them are good-necked, (with) lots of muscles and so far all that I’ve shown have been very, very sweet and kind, which is good for me,” Gigi shared during her Journal Winning Run interview. “If they’re sweet, we don’t want to get rid of them,” she added with a smile.

It was through showing horses that Greg and Gigi met, and it’s through showing horses that they share their love.

“He’s my support and he’s my everything,” Gigi shared. “It’s wonderful (to show with Greg). We met showing horses and we just love it.”
Married for 21 years, the Savannah, Tennessee, couple shares a lot of things, including the shank of Heza Stemwinder.

“(Heza Stemwinder) is qualified for the World and we plan on doing that – the open and amateur,” Gigi said. This November, Greg will take the stallion’s shank for amateur aged stallions and trainer Steve Ferguson of Tyler, Texas, will try his hand in aged stallions.

“We’ve just shown him a couple times this year to get him qualified,” Gigi said of Heza Stemwinder. “He probably will never have to go to the show pen again.”

But that’s OK, since Heza Stemwinder has taken to the paternal lifestyle.

“I have a yearling by him and I’m gonna show her and then there’s other people who will be showing some babies by him, too,” Gigi said. “He’s grown, improved; we just wanted everyone to see him and hopefully have some babies!”
