AQHA Select World Show 2015

2012 Select World

Performance Halter Geldings

John Watts, a veteran horse-show dad, gets his shot at gold.

For 26 years, John Watts was the faithful horse-show dad. But a little over a year ago, John’s family persuaded him to take his turn at the shank.

With a great partner – One Hot Amigo – John shined in the 29-horse performance halter geldings class on August 25 at the 2012 Adequan Select World Championship Show in Amarillo.

You could say it all started back in November 2010 when John’s daughter, AQHA Professional Horseman Kelley Watts Rampey, was looking for the perfect horse for her now 12-year-old daughter, Kaylee. One Hot Amigo turned out to be the perfect horse for the entire family. With the 10-year-old sorrel gelding, Kaylee won the 2011 AQHA Justin Rookie of the Year 11-&-Under award and Kaylee’s father, Kyle Rampey, was the 2011 amateur reserve world champion with the gelding. But to make 2011 even sweeter, AQHA Professional Horseman Wayne Halvorson of Guthrie, Oklahoma, led One Hot Amigo to the open performance halter geldings reserve world championship.

As John’s herd of grandchildren will tell you, that’s not all the son of Zippo Hot Pine has won: At the 2011 Adequan Select World, John and One Hot Amigo placed third in performance halter geldings.

In the last year, John and his team have worked hard to make One Hot Amigo gold-trophy worthy. And that hard work certainly paid off.

“We expect to do well; we never expect to win, we just pray for the best,” John said with a laugh during his Journal Winning Run interview. The Crescent, Oklahoma, horseman will tell you, he couldn’t do it by himself.

“I got a lot of people (to thank),” John said. “My wife, my three daughters – Kristi, Kelley, Kasey – and Wayne Halvorson and my son-in-law for his hard work, and Mike at Halvorson Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma.”

If there is anyone who might possibly enjoy the win more than John, it’d be one of his three daughters. An AQHA world championship trophy couldn’t be more fitting for the man who hauled his three daughters around and poured countless time and money into their hobby – at least that’s what the girls will tell you.
