AQHA Select World Show 2015

2013 Select World

2-Year-Old Colts

Janet Nelson adds another world championship to her resume with her win in 2-year-old stallions at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show.

The cheers did not seem to phase Heza Star Kidd when he and owner Janet Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa, were announced world champions at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show.

Along with a world championship, he could have won an award for the best-behaved stallion at the show.

“He showed really well; he’s always just been a really easy horse to show. He’s always been quiet. He just goes in and does his job. He was point-on today. I couldn’t ask him to do anymore,” Janet said.

The horse has an extensive resume even at such a young age, but this is his first accomplishment at an AQHA world show.

“At the Quarter Horse level, this is my first world championship,” Janet said. “It’s unimaginable – the greatest feeling ever.”

The young stallion is by PTMA Star Kid, who traces back to Kid Clu. He is out of BQH Play Pretty, who traces back to Mr Conclusion by Conclusive. It is no surprise that Heza Kid Starr has already achieved so much success.

The palomino colt was a glimmer of color in a class of bays and chestnuts. But this is not the only reason the judges were taken with him: Heza Star Kidd has had just as much success among his peers at Palomino Horse Breeders of America shows.

“The stud that I showed is a four-time Palomino world champion, and a premier halter stallion in the PHBA,” Janet said.

She was smitten with him from the start.

Janet fondly recalls her purchase: “I bought him when he was just a little baby, about 10 days old. I went out and looked at him and loved him. I kept him at my house until he was a year old, then I sent him to Doug and Marcy Coleman down in Dewey, Oklahoma. They’ve had him ever since.”

Janet and Heza Star Kidd works with trainers Doug and Marcy Coleman, as well Denny Hassett to prepare the shows.

This is her first year at the Adequan Select World, but she is not a rookie to the halter-horse scene.

“I’ve been involved for about 20 years,” she said. “It’s my first year the Adequan Select World, and we’ve had a wonderful time.”

She and her husband have worked with halter horses for years, brought their children up in it and now, hope to get their grandchildren into the sport.

“I got started with my kids in 4-H, then just got them into the Quarter Horse level. It’s just us that show anymore. I’d like to get my grandkids into it,” Janet said.

What’s next for Heza Star Kidd? Janet said that she’s just taking it one show at a time. He may make an appearance at the AQHA World Championship Show, but maybe he will retire on top.

“He’s a world champion now. That’s kind of a cool deal to end them on,” Janet said. “We’re going to put him in the breeding pen and maybe get some babies by him.”
