AQHA Select World Show 2015

2013 Select World

Kimberly Laser braves a torn ACL to win her first world championship aboard Little Bunny Fou Fou.

Kimberly Laser of Huntsville, Alabama, needed a little help getting out of the saddle after earning her first world championship on August 25 at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show.

The 55-year-old had just bested 14 other finalists in the Select boxing class with a hefty brace on her leg.

She wasn’t going to let a torn ACL stop her from doing her best in the show pen with her 7-year-old bay mare Little Bunny Fou Fou by Meradas Money Talks and out of Lucky Baylite.

When she’s not riding, Kim plays professional doubles tennis. It was during a match in April that she suffered her ACL injury. Kim and ‘Bunny” were qualified for the Select World in boxing since the Arizona Sun Circuit in January, so Kim’s trainer and brother in law AQHA Professional Horseman Brad Lund kept Bunny fit and ready by showing her in open events while Kim recovered.

Despite the challenges she faced to get here, including limited practice time, Kim and Bunny clicked August 25 for the top score of 436.5 and Kim’s first world championship.

"She’s just an awesome mare,” Kim said. ”She really takes good care of me out there. I couldn’t ask for anything better. She’s so good on the cow. She’s so honest, and she really looks out for me."

Kim bought the mare three years ago from Eric Dunn of Norwich, Kansas, the owner of 2012 Farnam Superhorse Rising Starlight.

Kim is new to the cow events and said she never dreamed of winning this event.

“Two weeks ago, I fell off!” she laughed. “I was just hoping to hold the cow and stay on!" She said her ACL injury isn't painful in the saddle, but she has to have help getting on and off her horse.

“I grew up showing reining,” she continued. “I like the fact that, in boxing, you have another element. You have the cattle on top of the reining. It’s so much fun. I’m older, I take blood thinners and I can’t go down the fence. I don’t ride enough all year long to even attempt it. This is the way to do the reining, work a cow and be safe and smart. I think it’s a great event.”

This is Kim's second year to show at the Select World.

"I love the relaxed atmosphere and how friendly everyone is,” Kim said. “I’ve made a lot of friends, and everybody cheers. I’ve made friends all over the U.S. This is such a confidence builder and a great atmosphere.”
