2013 Select World

Team Penning

A longtime team puts together a winning run for the world championship at the Adequan Select World Championship Show.

One veteran and two first-time world champions claimed gold August 25 at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show in Amarillo.

Sharon Kuebker of Gurnee, Illinois, Bill Borgen of Moorhead, Minnesota, and Scot Stelter of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, took advantage of their 12-year partnership and their first-place position coming out of the preliminaries to win world championships in team penning.

“I went in first and the first cow came out pretty well,” Bill said. “And I pushed it down (the arena) a ways, because the cattle were turning back. And then the cattle started moving back and forth quite a bit. I actually went back in and got the second cow. And then Scot went in and got the third cow. We knew we had time, and my partners did a great job. It worked out well.”

Bill was on Park It Hot for his first world championship, a 1994 sorrel mare by The Hot Express and out of Park N Tina by Parkman Bar. She was bred by Perry Corder of Crockett, Texas, and the 2012 AQHA World Championship Show was supposed to have been her last show.

“I decided to bring her out of retirement and ride her here,” Bill said. “I looked her up when I got here, and she has a lot of points. She’s been a great horse. This is her retirement party, but I think she’ll be back here next year.”

Scot’s horse, Wranglers Little Nic, is a family horse, he said.

“She’s a bay mare we bought about four years ago,” Scot said. “She was the first horse we bought after we had a fire and lost all our horses. My niece and my daughter ride her in all the classes, so she’s a nice mare and does a good job.”

The 2004 bay mare is by Starlights Wrangler and out of Smart Like Jewel by Reminic. She was bred by Travis Filipek of Oregon, Wisconsin, and the Select world championship was her first trip to the winner’s circle.

It was the first trip for Athenacatalena, as well, but her owner, Sharon, has earned five previous world championships.

“I got (Athenacatalena) last year in February as a pretty green horse,” Sharon said. “Not for team penning, but I broke her for team penning. And she’s been doing really good, and I hope she carries on my tradition of winning a little bit. I hope my partners stay with me.”

Athenacatalena is a 2009 sorrel mare by Athena Puddy Cat and out of Salena Gold by Peppy San Badger. She was bred by Gerald Clement of Thompsons Station, Tennessee.
