AQHA Select World Show 2015

2013 Select World

Weanling Geldings

Daniel Sommerer hits the jackpot at his first Adequan Select World Championship Show.

Daniel Sommerer’s debut at the Adequan Select World Champion Show was not without reward. The horseman from Jefferson City, Missouri, secured his first world championship title in weanling geldings with his horse, Embrace Me Cool.

This is Dan’s very first time to compete at an AQHA world champion show and said, “It feels wonderful. It feels better than I expected,” when asked about his win.

The experience has been fruitful and fun.

“This is a great venue. People have been very supportive and wonderful. I thank AQHA for putting something like this on,” he said.

His family is not new to the show world; in fact, halter horses are a family interest. His twin sons, Lance and Chance, qualified for the AQHA youth world show in 2008. Lance Sommerer finished eighth in 2008 with the dam of Dan’s weanling.

“It is a family event. We’ve got another son who’s in high school. My daughter just started college. She and my wife, they’re at home taking care of things while we’re off all week,” Dan said.

He and his wife raised their kids around horse showing, particularly in halter.

“The conformation, the beauty, the structure, the size – we just enjoy it,” said Dan.

Dan’s gelding, Embrace Me Cool, is homegrown. He's out of their mare Embracing and by Very Cool. The gelding’s win should be no surprise. He is set up for success, tracing back to Mr Conclusion, Kid Clu and Ima Cool Skip.

They breed and raise halter horses and hope to bring a few up-and-coming foals to the Adequan Select World next year.

Embrace Me Cool “is a foal we raised. We raised his mother, his grandmother. (Embracing) has made a nice broodmare. We were actually there when she delivered this colt. He’s a special colt,” Dan said.

Though this is his first trip to an AQHA world show with horses, Dan is very familiar with livestock production and animal management. He recently retired in January from his position at the University of Central Missouri where he was an animal manager.

Coupled with his extensive experience as a show-dad, this position has prepared him for his success developing a horse program. Plus, he has a great support group that allows him to be so successful.

Dan was swarmed when he entered the barn before his win picture. Hugs, congratulations and phone calls were all warmly received. When asked about his entourage, he smiled.

“We’re all friends with Chris Arentsen. He’s our trainer, he and Joe Engle. They did a wonderful job getting the colt ready. He brought 11 horses down here. The Select people, we really enjoy them as company. They’re a great group of people to be around. We’re very supportive of each other, as you probably saw,” said Dan.

“I’ve got an extensive ‘honey-do’ list,” Dan chuckled, “I do the running and some of the maintenance. A barn full of horses keeps you busy.”
