2013 Select World

In a sequined vest patterned in colors to match the Arizona desert, Katherine Tobin rode a cadenced pattern August 31 to win western riding at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show.
Kathy claimed the gold trophy on More Radical, a 2004 bay gelding by Radical Rodder and out of Zip Me Some More by Zippo Pine Bar.
“It feels incredible,” said the Scottsdale, Arizona, resident. “You work so hard, as everybody does, and I don’t care who wins, I’m happy for anybody, but it’s really incredible when it’s you who gets to be the trophy winner.”
More Radical and Kathy were third in western riding at the 2012 Adequan Select World, and he was ninth in senior western riding at the 2012 AQHA World Championship Show. He has earned $23,580.64 in National Snaffle Bit Association competition and $9,943.09 in AQHA competition.
“(His soft movement) is natural,” Kathy said. “We don’t have to do anything but let him do his job. I have to stay out of his way. It’s a lot better when I leave him alone.”
Kathy was thrilled with her final score of 226.
“It’s probably the highest (score) I’ve gotten on him,” she said. “It was exciting because I usually have a problem with the log and (August 30) in the prelims and today were the first two rides that I really had good maneuvers over the log. The rest was just trying to get the lead changes in the middle. I’ve had problems with that, too. The horse has been good. It’s the pilot that has had the problems, so today we both got together.”
Katherine, who has competed at every Select World since the event began in 2002, has multiple top-10 finishes and four previous world championships: 2004 in trail, 2005 in western riding, 2006 in hunter under saddle and 2008 in trail.
“I was thinking of the rhythm to get the changes correct,” she said. “And then I was thinking to stay in the middle between the cones and across the middle, hitting the (lead changes) there, too.”
More Radical, aka “Rodney,” is an honest ride, Kathy said.
“He’s very mellow and friendly, and he loves his peppermints, so he always comes over, hoping you have one in your pocket,” she joked in her exclusive interview with the Journal. “He’s already had three (today), and I’m sure when he gets back to the stall, there will be plenty more. We’ll be needing a horse dentist soon. He’ll have cavities.”
Kathy got her equine partner from her sister, a fellow competitor in the class.
“I have to thank my sister Susie Johns,” Kathy said. “She sold him to me, and that was really special. And then Jim and Deanna Searles and my husband Gerry Tobin for all the support and the hours Jim and Deanna put in, and our barn supports each other, so friendships and everyone. It took a whole barn plus a village.”
