2013 Select World

Debby Brehm wanted a show-stopping name for her show-stopping horse: Kayotic is what she got.
On August 28 at the 2013 Adequan Select World Championship Show, Debby led Kayotic to the yearling colt world title. By Fearles and out of My Sweet Innocence by Coolest, Kayotic was bred by Lonn and Kathy Smallwood of Pilot Point, Texas.
It’s been quite a while since Debby, who hails from Lincoln, Nebraska, has shown a colt, and she said she can definitely feel the difference between showing a colt as compared to a filly or gelding.
“We’ve won (with a colt) before my daughter was old enough to show. Pure Play, I had two world championships with him,” Debby told the Journal. A son of Playgirls Conclusion and out of the Skipa Star mare Pure Indulgence, Pure Play won the 1996 yearling colts and 1997 amateur yearling colts world championships.
“When my daughter, Morgan, was in youth, we could only show geldings and mares. Now she’s an amateur, and she said, ‘We want to show a stud,’ ” Debby explained.
“Denny Hassett has been our horse trainer for 29 years. I said, 'Denny, this year, let’s go for a stud.' So we found one. Kathy and Lon Smallwood had raised him and bred him. He had a different name, and I thought, ‘I want a real interesting name.’ So I thought ‘Kayotic,’ and I spelled it phonetically with a ‘K.’ ”
The newly crowned world champion can’t say enough great things about Denny: Debby credits the AQHA Professional Horseman from Auburn, Kansas, for her and Morgan’s success over the past 29 years.
“I had shown when I was in youth, then when I was in college I was away from it and decided to get back into horses,” Debby recalled. “Some other people told me about Denny and we met in Wichita, Kansas, at that time. Ever since, we’ve been a great pair.
“I think I’ve got six world championships, my daughter has seven. I’ve got five reserves and she’s got six reserves,” Debby added. “I totally trust him. He and (his wife), Dana, are just the most honest, reputable people. I’m just pleased to be part of their program.”
Denny and his crew got Kayotic ready to roll for the show season, but Debby said Kayotic was shown just enough this year to qualify for the Adequan Select World. The yearling colt will also be shown at the Bank of America Amateur World Championship Show with Morgan and AQHA Open World Championship Show, where he will be shown by AQHA Professional Horseman Ross Roark of Monahans, Texas.

“Yesterday, we practiced and the colt was just as calm as could be; just great out there in the pen. Then today, something set him off and he lived up to his name, Kayotic,” Debby recalled with a laugh. “He didn’t track very well, but he calmed down once he got in there and he showed well.”
The Adequan Select World is one of Debby’s favorite shows, namely because the event highlights a crucial part of the industry, and the officials keep that demographic’s needs in mind.
“I’m glad the judges understand that we’re Select amateurs, too, and don’t have some of the strength that (younger exhibitors) might have,” Debby said. “They let me take my time to track him, and I really appreciate how they let me do that."
“The Select exhibitor is the exhibitor who continues to come to the shows and support the corporate sponsors, so I’m glad AQHA has this show and realizes our importance to the industry,” she added.
