Carl Lege and Codys Classic Lady
Louisianan Carl Lege beamed with pride after winning a Select tie-down world championship aboard Codys Classic Lady August 29. The gold trophy meant that his hard work paid off.
“It’s very special to me,” he told the Journal with a Cajun drawl. “I’ve had this mare about five years. I trained her myself along with my family. We did it on our own with no outside help. So it just makes this special because it’s a family deal, a family effort.”
Codys Classic Lady is a 1996 red dun mare by Mr Barbie Cody Jac and out of A Classic Lady by Great Pine. Carl’s kids nicknamed her “Princess.” He says Princess is the epitome of a versatile American Quarter Horse.
“When I bought her, she was a reining horse,” he explained. “I was looking for a good-looking mare, and I just stumbled upon her and winded up buying her and training her.
“We all ride her,” he continued. “My 9-year-old, Lexi, tracks calves around the arena on her, my 16-year-old, Paige, rodeos on her and my 29-year-old, Jennifer, rodeos on her. She just loves what she does. She’s no trouble around the barn or in the arena. She tries to please every time she goes out.”
This is Carl’s first Adequan Select World, and he’s here because of an interesting family combination.
“We do halter, too,” he said. “All my kids show halter horses. My dad’s here showing a halter mare (Carlton Leger showed Bita Nugget in 3-year-old fillies to second place in the Super-Select division). He’s 76. We fit all our own halter horses and get them ready and do it all as a family, my wife, my dad, all my kids and step-mother, we do it all as a family.”
The family sometimes gets funny looks when people find out he does roping and halter, an unusual combination.
“It’s different!” he laughed. "It’s kinda hard to explain to our friends. Halter’s something everybody in the family can do."
The plan for Princess: to start raising babies out of her.
She has one on the ground, Play De Banjo, by reining superstar Banjo Whiz, who Carl’s excited to start reining with.
“We’ve never done reining before, but with her breeding and the money in it, I’ve decided to start raising some reining babies.”
He thanks his wife, Gerri, for helping with his Adequan Select World accomplishment.
“She probably does 99 percent of the work,” he smiled. “She gets all the halter horses ready, grooms all the horses, unties calves, opens gates for me. I have to give a lot of credit to her.”
Carl has numerous tie-down and breakaway accolades, including the amateur breakaway world championship in 1998.
