Jeff Habighorst of Phoenix, Arizona, won the first November 14 finals at the 2013 AQHA World Championship Show, amateur weanling geldings, with Coolsified Secret. By Kid Coolsified and out of Milans Pretty Secret by The Top Secret, the gelding is owned by Jeff’s father, Vernon.

“He’s very quiet and good to show,” Jeff told The American Quarter Horse Journal. “We bought him in September after he won at the Iowa futurity. We (gelded him) and this is the first time that we’ve shown him. … He stood out there and showed good for me.”

Jeff had a busy day with four to show in halter classes. He ended up third in amateur yearling geldings with Be A Gunslinger and in 3-year-old geldings with Boys N Toys, and fifth in 3-year-old fillies with Best To Be Me.

“It was a little hectic to get started this morning, but we got through it,” he said and added, “Joe Engle is helping us with the horses, and he’s done a great job.”

It’s Jeff’s first world championship, although he’s led two reserve world champions. He won the 2010 reserve world champion aged gelding with A Kid By Design (his wife, Wendy, won that year with RPL My Te Cheerful); and he won the 1999 reserve world champion 2-year-old gelding with Im Mister Right.

“(As a youth,) I showed everything – pleasure, reining, halter, horsemanship. I stopped showing in the mid-80s and didn’t really show for 15 years,” he said.

Jeff works in the family business, Blue Ribbon Custom Tack, based in Phoenix, Arizona; Vernon and his wife, Rita, started it more than 30 years ago. The Habighorsts supply the Quarter Horse industry with custom saddles and tack and horse show awards.

Wendy owns and operates Show Me Again show clothes. Jeff and Wendy have two daughters, Jacey and Jordan.

The Habighorst family has already had a successful World Show. Vernon won the amateur aged geldings November 13 with RPL My Te Cheerful – Wendy, Vernon, and Vernon and Rita's granddaughters, Monica and Kaylee Hamm, have all won world championships with “Henry.”

Vernon likes to have quiet geldings, Jeff said, and chances are that Coolsified Secret will be shown by more of the Habighorst extended family.

“It’s very nice to finally get one with all the years that I’ve been showing,” Jeff said. “It’s nice to get one with a colt I really like.”

Jeff said that though the family tends to share the horses, the trophies they earn go home with the showman.

“My dad has a bunch at the store,” he said with a smile, “because he kind of ran out of room, I think.”
