BP Cartel Policy, a homebred 4-year-old son of Favorite Cartel racing for Bill Price, heads a full field of 10 aged sprinters entered back in Sunday's 400-yard, $135,750 Brad McKinzie Winter Championship (G1) at Los Alamitos.
BP Cartel Policy made his season debut with a second-place finish in one of two Winter Championship trials on January 26. However, the Oklahoma-bred gelding is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which he won three graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super and Los Alamitos Winter derbies.
BP Cartel Policy has been made the 5-2 morning-line choice by track linemaker Ed Burgart. The gelding drew post 7 and will be ridden by Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa.
Other contenders include London Toby, a homebred multiple graded stakes winning 7-year-old gelding trained by Scott Willoughby for owner Ed Allred. London Toby won two graded stakes last year, including the Brad McKinzie Winter Championship.
Willoughby is just one stakes victory away from becoming just the sixth trainer to score 100 Quarter Horse stakes wins at Los Alamitos. London Toby drew post 9 and will be ridden by Gabriel Lara.
The winner of this race will receive a presumptive berth in this year's Champion of Champions.
