Planned Giving to the American Quarter Horse Foundation
Planned Giving
Make a gift through your will or estate.
A gift to the American Quarter Horse Foundation through your will or living trust can benefit the American Quarter Horse and your family. It may allow you to enjoy financial or tax benefits while making a positive impact on the equine industry and American Quarter Horse community for generations to come.
Gifting through your will or trust allows you the flexibility to donate:
- a specific dollar amount
- a particular asset, such as real estate or stock
- percentage of your estate
- the remainder of your estate.
You can put your gift to work immediately or, if you prefer, designate it to one of our existing endowments or a named endowment (minimum dollar amount applies). Just remember, if your financial or family circumstances change, you may change your mind at any time.
When you are ready to establish your will or trust and are considering a gift to the American Quarter Horse Foundation
Consider all types of planned gifts.
Some of those we see most often are listed here.

Bequests:
A bequest or gift is a written statement in your will or trust directing that specific assets, such as cash, the stock from one specific company, or a percentage of your specific assets, be transferred to the American Quarter Horse Foundation upon your death.

Retirement Assets
A gift of your retirement assets from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension, or other tax-deferred plan is an excellent way to help the American Quarter Horse.
-
Many people will not use all their retirement assets during their lifetime. Consider how you might leave the remainder to the American Quarter Horse Foundation. These gifts can include retirement accounts, such as a 401(k), 403(b), or IRA; health savings accounts; donor advised funds; brokerage accounts; and other financial accounts, including CDs, money market, savings, and checking, that allow transfer on death (TOD) or payment on death (POD) designations.
Typically, retirement plan balances are subject to both income and estate taxes. But because AQHF is a nonprofit organization, we won't pay income tax on the distribution, nor will the gift be subject to estate tax. You may designate that a percentage or set amount of your retirement assets may be transferred to AQHF by completing a beneficiary designation form provided by your plan custodian. Another option is to name AQHF as a secondary or contingent beneficiary in case someone you have named cannot claim their portion.

Life Insurance
Gifts of Life Insurance to the American Quarter Horse Foundation provide an excellent opportunity to leave a legacy of support for the American Quarter Horse.
-
Life Insurance gifts can be an existing policy, either paid or partially paid, or a new policy. If the policy is an existing policy, fully paid, the life insurance gift to the charity is accomplished by naming the American Quarter Horse Foundation as the beneficiary of the policy on the beneficiary designation form. Upon your death, the Foundation will receive all, or a portion of, the proceeds from the policy depending on the wording of the beneficiary designation.
As with any decision involving your assets, we urge you to seek the advice of your professional counsel when considering an irrevocable life insurance policy gift to the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Pam Tushak, Vista California
“I believe the American Quarter Horse Foundation has some great programs to help the next generation. We must hand the reins to our youth and enable them to keep our Western traditions alive and enjoy opportunities with horses that my generation had growing up. You never know when you might end up in a box! People put off the inevitable because they think they are going to live forever. It becomes very complicated for the family to deal with a loved one’s property and livestock. You don’t want the government involved in the things you are most passionate about. Always think toward the future.”Sherry Jean McCarthy, Greenville, TX
Her closest friend Peggy Williams said about Sherry: “She knew immediately what she wanted to do with her estate plan when she learned about America’s Horse Cares from her attorney who spoke fondly of how his own special needs child benefitted from riding horses at the local therapeutic riding center. Sherry knew the love and comfort that came from a shared life with horses and wanted to share this with those who need them most.”
