Ron Hartley's Cartel Jess Rockin, last year's champion 2-year-old filly, will make her sophomore season debut in Saturday's 400-yard Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) trials at Los Alamitos Racecourse.

Cartel Jess Rockin will make her first start since December 15, when the bay daughter of Favorite Cartel scored a victory in the 400-yard Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1). Trained by John Cooper, the filly has won three of nine starts and has earned $840,640 while racing exclusively in California.

Cartel Jess Rockin drew the rail post and will be ridden by Juan Pablo Leon in the second of four trials. The filly's opponents in the second heat include Runforyourlife, a sorrel Favorite Cartel gelding trained by Chris O'Dell, last year's champion trainer, for Rosenthal Ranch LLC, last year's champion owner. Runforyourlife has earned $583,153 from nine outs, and his five wins include last year's Golden State Million Futurity (G1).

Runforyourlife drew post 5 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the February 8, $190,550 Los Alamitos Winter Derby final.
