Champion Apocalyptical Jess, a son of Apollitical Jess owned by Bill Robbins of San Jose, California, heads a field of 10 sophomores entered in Saturday's 440-yard, $1,008,129 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
Trained by Trey Wood, Apocalyptical Jess brings in a five-race win streak that includes a 1 3/4-length victory in the 400-yard, $319,975 Remington Park Derby (RG3) on April 20, and a neck victory in the 400-yard, $958,766 Ruidoso Derby (G1) on June 8. The Oklahoma-bred gelding has won eight of 11 starts, including last year's All American Futurity (G1), and he has earned $2,086,573.
"He won't get any fitter," said Wood of Apocalyptical Jess. "He's eating, and as long as he's eating we aren't changing anything. He just hangs out, and we run him."
Apocalyptical Jess, last year's champion 2-year-old gelding, drew post 10 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez. His nine opponents include graded stakes winner Eagle Coast, a son of One Dashing Eagle trained by Jose Luis Muela for owner Ernesto Palacio of Odessa, Texas. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Eagle Coast has banked $239,688 from 10 outs, and his four wins include last year's 400-yard, $344,000 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.
Eagle Coast drew the rail post and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr.
