Zee James, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr owned by Robert Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey, is the fastest qualifier to the July 28, $190,937 Zia Derby (RG2) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Adrian Ramos for trainer Wes Giles, Zee James on Saturday won the second of five 400-yard trials by three-quarters of a length in :19.540. The filly was winning for the sixth time in 12 starts and pushing her bankroll to $258,629.

Zee James was facing state-bred sophomores off of her seventh-place finish in a 400-yard Ruidoso Derby (G1) trial on May 26. Her record includes a victory in last year's 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park. However, the filly's win on Saturday marked her first victory since October 13, when she scored a half-length victory in a 400-yard New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) trial at Zia Park.

"She'd always been a little unsettled," said Giles of Zee James. "We bought her a goat and worked with her, and she's calmed down."

Second-fastest qualifier Cd Mamas Boy won the first heat in :19.598. Jose Enrique Ortiz rode the gelded son of champion First Moonflash for owner Daniel Ramirez and trainer Juan Esquivel.
