The Foundation invites the application of research proposals with emphasis on featured topics that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the American Quarter Horse.

In response to an emergent industry need for research, the American Quarter Horse Foundation (AQHF) invites the application of research proposals with emphasis on featured topics that promote the welfare and wellbeing of the American Quarter Horse. Identified topics will vary from year to year with criteria and deadline information posted through the Foundation’s online application process.

Research proposals will be reviewed by the AQHA Equine Research Committee and will be evaluated and recommended for funding based on scientific merit, relevance to the outlined topic(s), and ability of the principal investigator to complete the research. PI expertise, total funding requested and the proposed timeline will be considered. Proposals will be reviewed and recommended for funding as received. Up to a maximum total of $50,000 in funds will be available for selected studies. This call for proposals will be closed upon exhaustion of available funding or the proposal deadline, whichever is reached first.

  • Budget (including amount of funding requested)*

*AQHF will not fund salary of principal investigator(s), indirect costs, the purchase of capital equipment or travel to scientific conferences, nor overhead no matter how it may be defined. AQHF will fund salaries of additional personnel such as lab technicians, graduate students and student workers; consumable supplies, service contracts and publication costs; the purchase, lease and care of horses. If horses are purchased, salvage value must be documented and deducted from the cost; graduate student tuition at the resident rate provided more than 50% of the student’s time is being spent on the project and documentation accompanies the grant application (i.e. copy of tuition and fees for graduate students from the catalog of the University); benefits based on time committed to the project. Documentation outlining the formula for determining fringe benefits and items included as fringe benefits must accompany the grant application.
