The weekend of November 15-17 was one full of action and excitement in Clovis, New Mexico, and at the Clovis Livestock Auction’s Annual Winter Horse Sale.

The weekend not only held the horse sale but also the third annual Clovis-Cactus Cow Horse Futurity. A total of 18 entries competed for a purse of $26,500, plus a Cactus saddle and prizes donated by Cactus Saddlery. This event consists of three events: dry work reining pattern, cow work and steer stopping.

“The level of this year’s competition is by far the best we’ve had and we’re looking forward to an increased purse and quality competitors in the future,” the sale said in a statement.

The winner was Shawn Holden and SR Lil High Brow CD, a 2016 colt bred by Dennis Kenemer of Altus, Oklahoma. The son of High Brow CD is out of the CD Olena mare Little Belly Button. They earned $10,000.

Second was Taylor Peters and Last PG Cat Olena, a bay filly bred by Michael Mitchell of Iowa Park, Texas. The 2016 filly is by Little Cat Olena and out of the PG Gunpowder mare PG Gunpowder Affair. They earned $6,000.

Third and earning $3,000 was the Ranching Heritage-bred Ranch Rooster, who competed for breeder Durrett Cattle Co. The 2016 bay colt is by Gallo Del Cielo and out of the PC Fire N Smoak mare PC Miss Smoakum.

The horse sale began Saturday morning at 9 a.m., offering a few of the competing 3-year-olds, followed by approximately 250 catalog horses. The highest seller was a 2014 bay gelding, sold by Meyer Horse Co., for $17,000. This sale offered not only some top team roping horses and ranch geldings, but an excellent set of yearlings which are now eligible to be nominated to the 2021 Clovis-Cactus Futurities. Buyer participation was very active with this sale boasting 90% completed sales.

After a successful 2019, the Clovis Horse Sales and Clovis Livestock Auction is expanding in 2020. They will host a Clovis-Cactus Team Roping Futurity for 4-year-olds in August 2020.
