HH C J Shake, a sorrel Escondido Beach gelding and the fastest qualifier, held on at the wire to win Saturday's 350-yard, $173,370 QHRA of Indiana Stallion Service Auction Futurity (R) at Indiana Grand.

Breaking sharply from Post 6 under jockey Juan Marquez, HH C J Shake led at every call while defeating Beach Benny by a nose in :17.677. Paul Martin saddled the gelding for owners Larry Carter, John Myers, Gary Brandon Bell, and Rusty Hawkins.

“He was good in the gates, the best he’s ever been,” said Marquez. “Everything was perfect tonight.”

HH C J Shake was bred in Indiana by Larry Carter and John Myers. The gelding is out of Shakem Jake, a winning 12-year-old daughter of Royal Shake Em. His second dam, the Sixarun mare Jakes Jockmo, won two graded stakes in 1999, including the Texas Classic Derby (G1) at Lone Star Park.

HH C J Shake was coming off of a neck victory in the first of three trials on August 10. Campaigned exclusively at Indiana Grand, the gelding has won three of five starts and has earned $82,417. His resume includes an eighth-place finish in the June 15 Gordon Mobley Futurity (R).

“After he won his first start, he showed the ability to be a great horse,” said Martin. “He had a rough trip in the (Gordon Mobley Futurity), but he has continued to get better. Once he figured out how to break, he's just been getting better and better.

"He showed us in the trials he was able to perform at a high level," the trainer added. "I felt really good about coming into this race tonight, and I thought if he raced back like he raced in the trials, he would be tough to beat.”

HH C J Shake's win earned a $5,000 bonus for his sire, Escondido Beach. This bonus to the sire of the winner of the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction is a new addition to the Indiana program.
