A $22,000 yearling purchase at last year's New Mexico-Bred Sale, Mister Riptide on Friday posted the fastest qualifying time to the July 28, $433,129 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

Mister Riptide won the last of 11 trials by 2 3/4 lengths while covering his 400-yard trip in :19.483 under jockey Ricky Ramirez. Trey Wood trained the sorrel son of Woodbridge for owners Mark and Annette McCloy of Tatum, New Mexico.

The McCloys signed the ticket for Mister Riptide at the New Mexico-Bred Sale.

"It was getting near the end of the sale, and we were looking for a filly," Mark McCloy recalled. "We saw him and bought him, even though he was a gelding."

Mister Riptide was bred by  Mac and Janis Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. The gelding is out of Ms Riptide, a winning and multiple graded stakes placed 12-year-old daughter of champion Ocean Runaway.

Mister Riptide has won two of three starts and has earned $27,039. The gelding was a finalist in the June 15, 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
