Twenty-one hand-selected ranch horses sold March 21 in the inaugural Private Selection Sale at the Houston Rodeo Livestock Show and Rodeo. TH Royal Quixote Cat, a homebred consigned by Triangle H Ranch (Missy Lyons) of Iola, Texas, topped the sale at $30,000. The sale averaged $15,762 per head and raised $13,000 for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund.

TH Royal Quixote Cat, Hip No. 22, is a 2009 sorrel mare by Cats Quixote Jack and out of TH Royal Red Peppy by Peppy San Badger. She was purchased by cutting enthusiast Bobby Blue of Weatherford, Texas.

Other high sellers included Hip No. 12, WM Blasted Smart, at $26,500 and Hip No. 20, Show Biz Sug, at $29,500. WM Blasted Smart (Nitro Dual Doc-Smart Little San by Smart Little Lena), consigned by Wes and Sarah Williams, was the 2013 and 2014 Zoetis Versatility Ranch Horse AQHA open reserve world champion. Show Biz Sug (Show Biz Billy-Sugs Glitter by Doc's Sug), consigned by Salt Creek Performance Horses (Mozaun McKibben), was the 2013 AQHA open ranch horse pleasure world champion.

The Private Selection Sale was managed by the Texas A&M Equine Sales Management class and hosted by the Texas A&M Equine Initiative. The sale gave students a hands-on opportunity to learn about everything involved in managing a successful sale. In addition to the educational opportunities this sale provides to Texas A&M, a portion of the proceeds of the sale supported the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund in support of scholarships and grants.

“Our goal at the Private Selection Sale is to be able to offer a set of horses that are pretty, sound, good-minded, athletic, and enjoyable,” said AQHA Executive Committee Member Dr. Jim Heird, Glenn Blodgett Equine Chair and executive professor and coordinator of the Equine Initiative at Texas A&M University. “The fact that buyers can enjoy a VIP experience at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and support scholarships, all while bidding on an outstanding set of horses, is an added bonus.”

The horses offered at the sale hand-selected and described as “Houston Horses,” ideally suited to be a trusted partner in pursuit of a Western lifestyle, consigned by historic ranches and well-known horsemen.
