Here are some tips on what mare owners need to know about stallion breeding contracts.

So you have a great little mare and you’d like to see what she can produce. You pick out a good-looking stallion from the advertisements in the Journal and you look him up online.

But right after the pictures and the pedigree comes the confusing part – a three-page legal document with unfamiliar jargon. It’s a stallion breeding contract.

What does all of the mumbo-jumbo mean? All you want to do is simply breed your mare to their stallion. Why does it have to be so complicated?

The Journal asked veteran breeding farm manager Debbi Trubee of Ohio Pine View Farms to walk us through some of the terms a mare owner might see on a contract.
