It’s gift-giving time, and members of the Journal staff were tossing around recommendations for their horse-loving friends. Then we thought of our readers and decided these suggestions were too good to keep to ourselves.

If you haven’t made all your selections yet, maybe something on our list will spark your interest.

A 2015 Calendar
The 2016 AQHA wall calendar features more than 50 photos of American Quarter Horses owned and loved by AQHA members. Not only will the folks on your shopping list enjoy the beautiful photography submitted by AQHA members worldwide, but they'll also appreciate the friendly reminders for upcoming shows, events and deadlines.

Logoed Gifts
I find one of the best gifts for a Quarter Horse lover is AQHA-logoed apparel or items from Quarter Horse Outfitters. Don’t know your friends’ or loved-ones’ sizes? Give them a QHO gift certificate!

Something to Read
A friend introduced me to the Brock Veterinary Clinic page on Facebook, and I instantly fell in love with Dr. Bo Brock’s sometimes funny, sometimes sad but always honest stories about his veterinary practice in rural Lamesa, Texas.

When he released a book last year, I had to get it for my e-reader. “Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere” did not disappoint. The tales are different lengths and self-contained, making it easy to pick up, read a chapter and save the rest for later. I’ve been savoring mine and in October, I purchased a print copy as a birthday present. I’m recommending it to everyone I know in agriculture.

Horse Treats
Any horsey friends that I need to send gifts to always get something from SmartPak. The Christmas peppermint bran mashes and/or tubs of fancy horse treats are standbys, and then the recipients’ addresses are saved online for future gifts. SmartPak handles the shipping, and presto poofo ... shopping is done. Plus, as a member, I get a 5 percent discount on my purchases.

The Practical Gift
Two years ago, my grandmother, Bonnie Christiansen, gifted me one of the best Christmas gifts ever – a membership to USRider. When I travel to horse shows, knowing that I have this roadside assistance card in my wallet definitely puts my mind at ease. And if Gramma hadn’t already beaten me to the punch, I’d say this would be my go-to Christmas gift for everyone.

You know, my membership is expiring soon … Hopefully, Gramma got that renewal notice in the mail, too.

Personalize
My favorite go-to gift for everyone at my barn is a personalized gift with a photo of their horse on it. I take photos of everyone’s horse, then use them to decorate an item at www.cafepress.com. The company has all sorts of great unique gifts, from coffee mugs to notebooks to ornaments to smartphone cases. If I’m getting a late start on gifting, a stocking with Uncle Jimmy’s Squeezy Buns is always a hit!
