Exercises for Horse Riders

Between your career and time spent in the barn, plus hours enjoyed on the trails or in the arena with your American Quarter Horse, working your gumption up to hit the gym can be a bit of a task at times.
However, obstacles such as time, equipment and space don’t have to eliminate your fitness program. Certified personal trainer and equestrienne Monica Brant returns in the February American Quarter Horse Journal to show readers a compact workout routine in “Stay in Show Shape” that readers can take with them pretty much everywhere – including the barn.
Monica is no stranger to the demands horseback riding and showing take on a body. Aside from a childhood embedded in riding and showing horses, Monica often travels to horse shows with her husband, AQHA Professional Horseman Brad Jewett of Universal City, Texas.
“As you ride, your core muscles are constantly engaged,” Monica told Journal special contributor Abigail Boatwright. “The muscles around your midsection are crucial to keeping your position during maneuvers. Core stability is important in both riding and everyday activities, such as walking and driving.”
In “Stay in Show Shape,” Monica shows readers five core-building exercises that also target biceps, triceps, glutes and thighs, and demonstrates variations on each exercise, plus shares time-saving tricks.
“Stay in Show Shape” is the final part of a two-part series with Monica. In “Reach for the Sky,” featured in the January Journal, Monica shared five exercises that riders should try pre-ride to increase their connection with their horse.
