Many top exhibitors in Versatility Ranch Horse showed January 16 at the Fort Worth Livestock Show & Rodeo.
With nine weeks left before the Zoetis Versatility Ranch Horse and John Deere Cowboy Mounted Shooting AQHA World Championships, riders were getting another practice show on their horses.
The world championships are March 20-22 in Houston, when the qualified competitors will compete in the five events of Versatility Ranch Horse: ranch conformation, ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch cutting and working ranch horse.
At Fort Worth, Fielding “Bozo” Rogers took the overall title on WM Blasted Smart, a 2005 red roan gelding by Nitro Dual Doc and out of Smart Little San by Smart Little Lena. He was bred by Hillis Akin of Gainesville, Texas, and is owned by Wes and Sarah Williams of Rhome, Texas.
“Wes bought him (at the Fort Worth Stock Show) at the Invitational Gelding Sale (in 2011), and we took him home to make a Versatility Ranch Horse out of him,” Bozo said. “We rode him all this last year, and he was high point horse in the nation (for 2013) in Versatility Ranch Horse.”
“Frosty” is qualified for the Zoetis VRH World and will be in Houston, Bozo said.
“He’s qualified, and we’ll take him down (to Houston) and hopefully do good down there,” he said.
Bozo and Frosty won ranch cutting and working ranch horse. They were third in ranch conformation and ranch riding and sixth in ranch trail to claim the overall title.
“He’s just made a real nice horse,” Bozo said. “He’s real nice to be around; he’s gentle. We’ve had a lot of fun with him. He’s pretty good in all events, so we’re just glad to have him.”
The next scheduled versatility events are:
January 21-22 in Denver
March 13 in Queen Creek, Arizona
March 30 in Clemson, South Carolina
