Martinganza Celebrates 15 Years in Style
Easter festivities, futurities, all-around champions and high-point winners put a mark April 2-5 on the circuit in North Carolina.

Year after year, exhibitors hustle to the good ol’ Southern hospitality for which Martinganza, or any North Carolina Quarter Horse Association show for that matter, has become famous. The 15th edition of Martinganza was no exception.
On hand to judge the event from April 2 to 5 in Williamston, North Carolina, were Kelly Chapman, Tim Abler, Laura Gilmer, Kenda Pipkin and John Pipkin.
“District IV NCQHA strives to give the exhibitors a good show and a good time,” said Susan Daniels, Martinganza show secretary/treasurer. “We increased our entries from 2014 and are already looking forward to 2016!”
Highlights from the show included the always anticipated exhibitors dinner on Friday night, where a hallmark eastern North Carolina barbecue was served, including fried chicken, vegetables and dessert. Also on hand were a D.J., mechanical bull and door prizes. Denice Lawrence, Amber Nead and their wonderful assistants are credited for the terrific themed decorations.

“We used the Easter theme this year as the show was on Easter weekend,” Susan explained. “We had an Easter egg hunt on Friday for the little ones, with the help of the NCQHA youth team and their adviser, Susan Ostrander. Some of our members – Beth Herndon, and Matt and Jana Frazier – sponsored the Easter eggs (there were a lot of them!) And we provided Easter baskets as prizes.”
While everyone had a great time at Martinganza, one exhibitor in particular had the experience of lifetime. Dorothy Owens (Grimes?), 73, said she thoroughly enjoyed herself as competing at her very first AQHA show. It had been 20 years since Dorothy had last shown a horse, and Dorothy paired up Starmanslopinleaguer.
A few special awards and prizes were handed out to:
- Debbie Williams – Show Secretary Award for Best Paperwork and Most Helpful
- Carl Eschenberg – Dedication Award
- Whitney Fields – black custom chaps donated by Jean’s Custom Show Fashions (Jean Gallman)
- Sydney Nicholls– free stall donated by Kimberly and Richard Franklin
