Mary Goos of Masonville, Iowa, is a tough competitor.

She led her bay roan Pleasure Do N Biznus two victory under two of the three judges in the amateur performance halter geldings, defeating two dozen competitors May 22 at the MAQHA Corporate Challenge in St. Paul, Minnesota.

And she did it on a broken ankle.

Pulling up the leg of her black slacks, she reveals a heavily wrapped ankle. She broke it, she confesses, from taking a bad step while gardening.

The pain didn’t stop her from bringing “Robbie” to the show and working toward her goal of gathering the points to qualify her to the Adequan Select World Championship Show in Amarillo. The two compete in all-around classes, including trail, horsemanship, western pleasure and hunt seat.

Mary has owned 8-year-old Robbie for five years. He is by Its A Zippo Good Bar and out of the mare Pleasure Persuasion, who is a full sister to the famed Zips Chocolate Chip (Zippo Pine Bar-Fancy Blue Chip by Custus Jaguar).

“I bought his half-brother first,” she says. “Then I saw a video (of Robbie) and said ‘I bought the wrong horse.’ ”

Despite her hesitation, her husband encouraged her to buy him, and eventually she did. Their partnership clicks. The horse is now an AQHA Champion in open and amateur. They have earned more than 70 points together in amateur, and Robbie has earned more than 335 points total.

Mary’s favorite class with Robbie is trail.

“He is so pretty to watch,” she says. “He has a lot of personality. He is just an all-around good boy.”

The MAQHA Corporate Challenge continues through May 25.
