The Most Fun Show in the West
This year’s Nevada Quarter Horse Association Silver State Circuit featured a hands-on clinic and plenty of fun for exhibitors of all ages.

As I reflect on the Nevada Quarter Horse Association’s Silver State Circuit in Elko, Nevada, July 14-17, the camaraderie among exhibitors stands out to me. The four days were packed with socializing and fun as attendees competed and learned together.
This year’s show offered an all-day fee with full crossover in every division, so exhibitors tried out many different classes. This boosted class numbers and exhibitors were happy with their new endeavors. Had I not put on hoof black, I would have jumped into some ranch pleasure classes!
The show began Wednesday night with a ranch pleasure clinic with AQHA Professional Horseman and Team Wrangler member Marty Simper. The clinic was very informative and each horseback attendee tried a pattern to find their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone was able to take away something to work on or perfect.
The clinic was enhanced as Ken Cochran, 16-year professional AQHA ring steward, shared his expertise and vast knowledge from a judge’s point of view. He explained scoring and expounded on details judges look for.
We then had surprise visitors as a couple of Budweiser Clydesdales made an overnight stop on their way to Lodi, California. No matter how long one has been around horses, they are still infatuating!
The show’s exhibitor appreciation dinner featured the best homemade food made by show manager Ric Keele’s wife, Jennifer. Attendees feasted on cinnamon rolls and scones while drawings, trainer foot races, dog races and a water balloon fight were enjoyed afterwards.
Thank you to everyone behind the scenes for putting the Silver State Circuit on and making it so fun. A big thank you goes to Laurel Wachtel, AQHA Judge and Professional Horsewomen, plus super mom and coordinator extraordinaire! She deserves so much credit.
Put this show on your radar for next year. It’s a rewarding event that you don’t want to miss!
