Two-time AQHA world champion tie-down roper Marcos Costa got another world champion title, this one at the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Riding Sort Of Popular, a 2007 sorrel mare by AQHA Superhorse Popular Resortfigure and out of the Quick Emotion mare RR Quick Bernice, Marcos was sitting in fourth place with $121,902 in earnings for the year heading into the NFR. He was hoping he could land his first tie-down roping title, but it was going to take consistency. He roped a calf every round, split second place twice and third place once, was third alone twice and fourth once. He moved up to third in the world after the first round, then bounced around between second and third until after Round 5. Then, he was a strong second.
Going into the 10th round and after doing the math and examining all of the possibilities with his mentor, PRCA world champion tie-down roper Stran Smith, Marcos knew he had to win the round to win the world.
And he did, with a time of 7.80 seconds, clinching the average, the world title and the chance to say he's the first PRCA tie-down roping world champion from Brazil.
"I didn't have much growing up and Stran (Smith) went down to Brazil and found me down there and watched me and brought me here," Marco said. "Stran taught me how to rope and he taught me almost everything about roping here (in the PRCA). I'm just happy to be here. God is great to me. I'm the happiest man in the world."
In the process of winning $195,519 at the NFR, Marcos also won the RAM Top Gun Award for taking home the most money at the Finals in a single event.
"I don't have words to say about the Top Gun Award," said Marcos, who received a new truck for the award. "This is just one more blessing I received this night."

Marcos finished in 81.3 seconds on 10 head for the average title. Heading into the final round, he knew what he needed to do.
"I was thinking about just go rope that calf and try and win the title," he said. "When I was praying today, I was saying that I was going to give everything I got to try and win the world if I had a chance. God's plan is different than ours, and if you trust in him in all of your heart, things will happen for you."
Marcos’ won the senior tie-down roping world championship at the 2017 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show on Trevor Hale’s Trouble With Kate (Badgers Eatin Out-Docs Trouble Bylena by Catalena Boy). In 2015, Marcos won the senior tie-down roping on another Popular Resortfigure mare, 2015 AQHA-PRCA Tie-Down Horse of the Year Sweet As Time, who is out of Startime Bertie by Dryin Time.
