The Michigan Quarter Horse Association celebrated its 2016 show season on January 14-15, 2017. With nearly 300 in attendance, members enjoyed meetings, dinner and dancing. Back by popular demand were educational seminars with AQHA professionals. Christa Baldwin provided a session on the AQHA scoring system, and Stephanie Lynn held a Q & A session on the National Snaffle Bit Association.

The annual Stallion Service Sale was also held on Saturday. 94 stallions were enrolled in the program. $40,000.00 has been brought in from sales thus far. This money is put back into the association to pay back Stallion Service Sale classes at the MQHA Breeder’s Futurity in September. There are still many great stallions available through the sale, and can be viewed online at miquarterhorse.com/stallion.

MQHA provided a memorable night of honoring the top six placings in every class, and all-around winners that took home new saddles. Special awards that were given are voted on by the membership.

  • Mother of the Year: Amy Atkinson
  • Father of the Year: Jeff West
  • Member of the Year: Barb Foster
  • Youth Sportsperson of the Year: Peyton Baxter
  • Sportsperson of the Year: Monty Montgomery
  • Most Valuable Professional: Tom Robertson

MQHA is also proud to induct a deserving person and horse into the Hall of Fame at each convention. Each is selected by a committee that spends hours of time conducting research to ensure that the honoree is represented in a way that highlights their noteworthy career. This year Theodore Lincoln and Tailored To Taste were honored by MQHA.

Lincoln, now 83, has spent nearly his entire life showing American Quarter Horses. He bought his first Quarter Horse in 1962 with his father. Their future in the horse industry began with this purchase, and from there they built a breeding program that was recognized on a national level. In 2015 Lincoln was named a 50 Legendary Breeder in the American Quarter Horse Association, an honor achieved by very few programs. Over the years Lincoln Farms has produced multiple world and reserve world champions, and several All American Quarter Horse Congress winners.

Tailored To Taste, a 1971 mare, was the horse inductee. She spent most of her life producing foals for Toteff and Evans Farm, the breeders of Mr. Conclusion. Of her 11 foals, there were three world champions among them and five reserve world champions.

Every year MQHA also awards one of their horse shows with the “Show of the Year” title. Winning again this year was the Harbor Classic that was held July 4-9, 2016. This award is also voted on by the membership. With entries exceeding 6,300, the Harbor Classic was 15th on the AQHA list of top shows in 2016.

MQHA had many things to celebrate from 2016, and exciting things to look forward to as they kick off the show season April 12-16, 2017 with the Easter Eggstravaganza.
