Caitlin Arthur is a familiar face at IHSA Nationals. The Saginaw Valley State University Graduate rode for the team while attaining her degree and finds herself at the shows every weekend with her mom, who coaches the team.
“I can’t imagine doing anything else. My Mom is the coach and I can’t stand on the sideline and not show, so for IHSA to allow alumni to come back and continue to show is amazing”
Arthur is familiar with the winners circle, having won the alumni Horsemanship for the past two years. She made 2017 a year to remember, picking up her third straight win. After defending her title, the alumni was understandably elated but her work has far from finished for the day. She had competed in alumni reining once before, finishing third. The yellow ribbon fueled a fire and she had doubled her efforts to improve her reining rides with increased lessons and training.
One of the last to go in the reining, Arthur marked a 143 on Middle Tennessee State University’s Boots to narrowly edge out Ohio State’s Cristen Cramer.
“This feels really great. I have been working really hard on the reining since becoming an alumni and this sport is just so much fun! And it’s really cool, my friend is from the school where Boots is from and she was my competitor and giving me tips for my ride”.
Somehow that seems to sum up what Alumni and IHSA are all about; deepening your love for the sport, hard work and creating friendships that transcend the competition format.
And what’s next for Caitlin? She says she will be back to defend her two National titles and will stay involved with the team and Association as long as she can.
