While most of Kentucky was focused on the run for the roses, hundreds of college riders and enthusiasts flocked to the Kentucky Horse Park on Derby day to cheer on the Nation’s top collegiate riders at the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association National Championships. Day two of the Western Portion of IHSA Nationals took the team’s one step closer to the AQHA High Point Team Award and crowned the individual Open Reining Champion.
The Western events kicked off with Kristen Wesoja marking a 147 to take the Individual Reining Championship for Cazenovia College. The Equine Business Management major made her first trip Nationals one to remember.
“It was a great experience. I was both excited and nervous at the same time” gushed the elated Wesoja.
The team competition continued later in the afternoon with a win for Rocky Mountain College in the Beginner Western Horsemanship by Sophomore Business Administration major Katie Andrews.
The win put Rocky Mountain College into fourth with nine points. Rocky Mountain College is narrowing trailing Black Hawk College with 10 points and St. Andrews with 11 points. University of Nebraska is holding onto the lead after the first day with 14 points.
The team competition will be decided this Sunday as the nine teams continue to battle it out in the famed Alltech Arena for the National Title.
