Many of the members of the San Luis Obispo County Quarter Horse Association have worked together for years. And when show time comes, they “hit the show grounds running”. Their Board of Directors is headed up by Linda Zohns who works closely with Club President Don Crow, their board members and volunteers to make their shows provide the best possible experience for the exhibitors.
We spoke to Linda Zohns and her comments were as follows:
“This has always been a local county club catering to the equine community of San Luis Obispo County. We have a very active scholarship program for high school seniors, and last year we gave out 6 scholarships. We also sponsor a community open show series during the summer where we give Champion and Reserve Champions silver buckles in over 30 divisions.
Our Board of Directors works very hard to create an atmosphere of fellowship and community service.”
President Don Crow says “The logistics of putting on an AQHA circuit with cattle classes and full rail & trail classes is a challenging undertaking. I feel our club tries to represent the Quarter Horse breed and industry by offering all of those classes. We are grateful to our exhibitors for supporting the Mother’s Day Circuit for 51 years and it remains one of the largest quarter horse shows in California. Last year our special event day was recognized by AQHA as one of the Top 10 in the Country. The facility has made a big investment to accommodate shows of our size; including a new, very large covered arena and the purchase of a large number of new stalls. They have more improvements in the plans for the next few years.”
Honor Thy Horse Show Parent
To honor all of the horse show Mom’s that work tirelessly for their children and “adult children”. Each year this club offers a “Mothers Day All Breed Pleasure Class” in memory of the late Kathy Hunt. This class is free to all Mothers (and Dad’s) who don’t typically show the horses, they just groom them and pay the bills. This is a walk/jog pleasure class that the kids usually have to talk their parents into entering. But once they find out every rider gets a bottle of wine from one of the local award winning wineries, the entries come “pouring” in.
Would You Like Wine With That?
The show draws a large crowd due to its beautiful tourist location.
The show grounds is a premier location to bring your horses and your family. Paso Robles has mild temperatures, a vast number of world reknown local wineries, Hearst Castle, restaurants of several award winning chefs, luxury golf courses and is situated along the beautiful Pacific ocean.
Cash, Buckles and Bronzes! OH MY!
The Mother’s Day Quarter Horse Circuit is held in Paso Robles, California each year and over $15,000 in awards and cash prizes. Professionally managed by TEEM (Total Equine Event Management), they reported some of the top riders & horses that bested the fields to take home some of the great prizes and/or cash.
There were a variety of the great prizes for All Around Champions; some received custom SLOCQHA jackets others Silver buckles.
A special bronze trophy is awarded each year to the Reserve Select Amateur All Around rider, in memory of Larry Mitchell.
Marie Miller (long time past President of the club) donates a special bronze trophy each year that is presented to the Circuit Champion in Amateur Level 1 Trail.
Finishline Horse Products provided some special awards in a variety of classes.
The SLOCQHA Mothers Day Circuit also offers $250 Circuit Championship awards is 25 particular classes that cover the broad spectrum of AQHA events….from Cutting Amateur Level 1 to Hunter Hack Amateur to Western Pleasure Junior Horse.
In addition, Wood’s Western sponsored $250 gift certificate as Circuit Awards in 4 events.
