Non-Exempt (Hourly) Open Positions

From working with horse registrations, to production and processing of paperwork, to accounting, to customer care and much more, there are a variety of Non-Exempt positions available at AQHA. Much of the horse paperwork that is completed for members and owners on a day-to-day basis is completed by Non-Exempt employees. These employees make up more than two-thirds of the AQHA workforce. Depending on the area of the position, there are a variety of position levels and much room for advancement and promotion opportunities.


Mailroom Clerk

AQHA is currently seeking a mailroom clerk for the Production & Processing department located in our international headquarters in Amarillo, Texas.

Position Summary:

Perform duties to open and prepare incoming mail for scanning the American Quarter Horse Association.  Review, prepare and scan incoming correspondence.  Enter tracking numbers in the computer system for FedEx, UPS and USPS packages received.  Deliver incoming mail and interoffice mail throughout the building.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems, and personal computers.
  • Maintain and update filing, inventory, mailing, and database systems, either manually or using a computer.
  • Open, sort, and route incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.
  • Compile, copy, sort, and file records of office activities, business transactions, and other activities.
  • Compute, record, and proofread data and other information, such as records or reports.

Awards Assembler

Awards Recognition Concepts (ARC) is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Awards Assembler in Amarillo, Texas.

Position Summary:

Work as part of a team having responsibility for assembling an entire product or component of a product for awards and trophies. Team assemblers can perform all tasks conducted by the team in the assembly process and rotate through all or most of them rather than being assigned to a specific task on a permanent basis. 

Essential Functions:

  • Import data files into Corel Draw and create artwork to engrave items with variable and/or conditional data.
  • Perform quality checks on products and parts.
  • Package finished products and prepare them for shipment.
  • Rotate through all the tasks required in a particular production process.
  • Sweep or otherwise clean work areas.
  • Operate machinery and heavy equipment, such as forklifts. 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cut material and make ready for engraving.
  • Assist with banner and sign production as instructed.
  • Load and unload product components from trailers.
  • Move office furnishings as instructed.
  • Assist co-workers as instructed by supervisor or department head.

This position does require a valid driver's license.

Exempt (Salary) Open Positions

Exempt employees can be found in the Association in a variety of departments that are critical to the overall business planning and strategic business decisions for the future of the Association like Marketing, Accounting, Publications, Human Resources and other areas. Many people applying for these positions have established careers in the associated fields and corresponding degrees and professional certifications. Like our Non-Exempt employees, opportunities for advancement exist and we are looking to fill our team with people who love the American Quarter Horse and want to share that love with others.

Communications Liaison

AQHA is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the Communications Liaison position. This candidate will work out of the international headquarters located in Amarillo, TX.

Position Summary:

Liaison with internal and external contacts to proactively and reactively strengthen, enhance and protect the image and reputation of the American Quarter Horse, AQHA, AQHF and ARC. Responsible for assisting the director of communications in developing and implementing AQHA’s and AQHF’s communications plans, and providing guidance to the various departments and programs to ensure ongoing success of media/public relations campaigns, in addition to coordinating special events for AQHA and AQHF.

Essential Functions:

  •  Write press releases or other media communications for AQHA and   AQHF.
  •  Respond to requests for information from the media or designate an   appropriate spokesperson or information sources.   
  •  Compile material for release to various audiences including media and   external.
  •  Assist with development or communication of informational programs   to maintain favorable public or AQHA member perceptions of AQHA's   accomplishments or agenda.   
  •  Establish or maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of   the community and media, in addition to enhancing list of media   contacts.   
  •  Prepare or edit AQHA publications for internal and external audiences,   including employee newsletters, event programs, email blasts. etc.    
  •  Assist director of communications with public appearances and media   interviews.   
  •  Assist director of communications in supporting the needs of the   executive vice president's office.
  •  Maintain AQHA News twitter, and assist with other social media   accounts.     
  •  Assist with planning, scripting and coordinating special events for   AQHA and AQHF.
  •  Study the objectives, promotional policies or needs of organizations to   develop public relations strategies that will influence public opinion or   promote ideas, products or services.
  •  Assist marketing staff with marketing initiatives.
  •  Travel to AQHA, AQHF and additional events, as needed, including but   not limited to assisting with special events, AQHA promotions and   education.

Manager of Racing

AQHA is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the Manager of Racing position. This candidate will work out of the international headquarters located in Amarillo, TX.

Position Summary:
Develop and implement programs designed to build ownership of American Quarter Horses among racing audiences. Coordinate efforts to promote AQHA racing including, but not limited to managing meeting materials, carrying out marketing strategies and work with other departments to explore new methods and venues for reaching current and future racing enthusiast. Oversee and coordinate day to day duties of the Racing department support workers.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in coordinating the enrollment, nomination process and racing activities for the Racing Challenge.
  • Work with AQHA Racing Affiliates to promote American Quarter Horse racing, AQHA racing services, and the Bank of America Racing Challenge all with a goal of increasing ownership and membership of and wagering on American Quarter Horses.
  • Maintain the Racing web page including but not limited to site edits and updates as well as coordination with IT as appropriate.
  • Operate as the liaison between marketing department, racing department and publications to help build marketing programs, advertising opportunities, web and other digital content AQHA racing.
  • Coordinate communication plan targeted to racing offices at tracks that run American Quarter Horse racing in order to promote AQHA Racing, its services and the Bank of America Racing Challenge.
  • Working with support staff, develop a roster of benefits that would encourage membership of racing trainers into the Association of Professional Horsemen.
  • Work with youth programs staff to stimulate participation of young people into American Quarter Horse racing.
  • Work with International department to continue develop Spanish-language programs for American Quarter Horse racing, geared to both domestic and international markets.
  • Coordinate the industry’s marquee events, meetings and functions.


  • Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Programmer Analyst

AQHA is currently seeking two programmer analyst positions to filled in Amarillo, Texas.

Position Summary:

Provide AQHA software development skills to both create and maintain existing systems primarily for C#/.Net, but can include other technologies.  Develop software across the full stack, including architecture and design.  Work with other teams to understand end-user requirements, formulate use cases, and then translate that into pragmatic and effective technical solutions. 

Essential Functions:

  • Identify opportunities where software can improve efficiency of business processes.
  • Design, code, unit test, debug, document and support software applications.
  • Formulate and define application scope and objectives.
  • Define and perform unit tests as systems are developed.
  • Prepare specifications from which programs will be written, coded, and tested.
  • Monitor and report to management on the status of project efforts, anticipating/identifying issues that inhibit the attainment of project goals and implementing corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot software application issues
  • Assist system administration team with application installation and testing.
  • Assist in managing relationships for third party application development and programming consultants.


  • Ability to independently work through tough problems without clear solutions.

  • Solid understanding of OO concepts, design decisions, and coding for robustness.

  • Proven experience in modern web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).

  • Proficient with standard IT development techniques and methods such as prototyping, continuous-integration and Agile/SCRUM.

  • Ability to quickly digest new technologies, patterns, and techniques and rapidly turn them into production-worthy applications.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

  • College degree in computer science, information technology or related field preferred.

  • 3 years of experience in C#/.Net or similar programming technologies in a modern environment.

  • Ability to provide direction and mentoring to  junior team members in a productive manner preferred for a senior role.

Director of Development

AQHA is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the Director of Development position with the American Quarter Horse Foundation and Hall of Fame. The candidate will work out of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum located in Amarillo, Texas.


As a part of an overall strategic development plan, direct/plan/coordinate activities to solicit and maintain funds for the American Quarter Horse Foundation. Work in conjunction with the Chief Foundation Officer and the Foundation team to craft successful fundraising strategies for major & principal gift development. In conjunction with the Chief Foundation Officer, oversee major gift and prospect development, prospect research, and current/planned/endowed giving.


  • Develop an efficient and productive prospecting system that produces a significant number of qualified leads for direct cultivation and solicitation of major gift opportunities.

  • Develop strategies for building relationships with potential donors.

  • Facilitate effective donor development communications with donor prospects and donors. 

  • Identify and be able to educate potential donors on multiple giving options.

  • Develop fundraising plans that maximize contributions and are cost effective.

  • Secure charitable gifts from individuals or corporate donors.

  • Develop strategies to encourage new or increased contributions.

  • Assist in the development of budgets for major gift development.

  • Effectively steward existing donor relationships for further cultivation. 

  • Write and send letters of thanks to donors.

  • Maintains the highest ethical and professional standards.


  • Experience in leading major gift development in a capital campaign or special project and successful record of achieving campaign/project goals.

  • Experience in developing a strategic plan for soliciting and securing gifts from private sources or the equivalent in the corporate environment.

  • Knowledge and skill in planned gift development and/or estate and financial planning.
