Youth Art Show

Registration is now open!

As you plan your school year, go ahead and mark two very important dates on your calendar!  First is the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum 2017 Youth Art Show opening reception on December 5.  The second is the FREE America's Horse In Art-Versatility and Art Field Trip on October 2 and 3; professional artists will lead a discussion addressing equine art techniques and how to pursue a career in art.  

2017 Youth Art Show

The annual Youth Art Show is an opportunity for students to learn more about the American Quarter Horse and then express what they’ve learned through original artwork. The students’ creations are entered in a competition and could win cash prizes. All students artwork must follow the official rules and guidelines of the 2017 Youth Art Show. 

The Museum will provide teachers with curriculum that follow the TEKS, and resources to the following themes to teach your students about the American Quarter Horse. The artwork can be based around the following topics and supporting material.

In addition to creating artwork, students will need to write responses to the four short answer questions related to the topic of their artwork. The change in the writing portion of the contest was made to be in line with Texas state writing and English writing assessments. The questions for each topic can be downloaded from the list of topics above.

All students must be registered by October 20, 2017 - any and all entries received after October 20, 2017 will not be eligible for final consideration.  All artwork must be at the Hall of Fame by Saturday, November 11, 2017 by 5:00 p.m. Once the art has been sent to the Hall of Fame, staff will judge on the student's written essay, and the artwork will be reviewed by our jury of professional artists.  Only the best 150 pieces will be hung in the Scharbauer Gallery and will be on display from December to mid-January.

Participating teachers and students are encouraged to attend the opening reception on the evening of December 5. During the evening event, winners will be announced and will receive their cash prize.  There are separate first, second and third place cash prizes for students in the junior high division and the senior high division.  The cash prizes are as follows: 

  • First place $500
  • Second place $250
  • Third place $100
  • (2) Honorable Mentions $25

The student whose artwork is chosen as "The Best in Show" will have their work custom-framed and hung in the Museum for one year.  In addition to this honor, the teacher representing the winning student will be awarded a FREE field trip to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum for the 2017-18 school year. 

  

 

 

 

Official Rules and Guidelines for the 2017 Youth Art Show  

  1. All participants must register by the deadline, October 20, 2017. If registration is not received, student's artwork will not be judged for the exhibit.  All entries will receive a confirmation email from the museum stating the proper forms were received.
  2. Teachers must register students currently enrolled in their class.
  3. We are interested in work that captures the spirit of the American Quarter Horse and addresses the themes: Rodeos and Racing, Ranchers and Cattle Drives, and US Military Horses throughout American History.  All Youth Art Show pieces should focus on the American Quarter Horse in scenery chosen from the approved historical events list. 
  4. Students will need to answer the four short questions related to the theme of their artwork. Each short answer must be a complete paragraph and typed in Arial font size 12. All handwritten submissions or those not typed in Arial font, will be receive a score of 0.
  5. Students must use the provided resources to learn more about their subject.  The Hall of Fame & Museum staff does not consider Wikipedia a reliable research source nor is it included in the source material.
  6. Artwork must be securely mounted flat on no larger than a 16" x 20” piece of flat black foam core with a minimum of a 1” border around the artwork. The 1" inch border allows the curator to hang the art without puncturing it with a nail used to display it.  Please contact the Hall of Fame if the school or student cannot obtain black foam core.
  7. Contestants are limited to one entry each. Entries may be in a medium of the artist's choice but must be a medium presentable on good quality bond or drawing paper, or illustration board.  
  8. Three dimensional pieces can stand no more than 1.5" off the black foam core and must be secured efficiently on board.
  9. Entries using photography, or graphic design as their primary medium will not be considered for this contest.
  10. Entries are not to be framed. 
  11. Composition must be original. Photographs can be used as a reference and must accompany the piece for judging.
  12. Photographs may be used for reference, but artwork determined to have been traced, copied from an existing photograph or work of art will be disqualified.  Photographs or items of reference must be scanned and/or photocopied and attached to the back of the artwork with short answers. 
  13. Please let us know if you are having difficulty getting the pieces to the Museum. 
  14. Top 150 chosen pieces will hang in the Museum to be viewed by the public. 
  15. Any artwork left past the pick up date of January 31, 2018 will be disposed of by the Museum.
  16. Students eligible for entry must attend school in the following counties:
