Now that the calendar page has turned to the month of June, let's recognize the horsemen that set the pace in the standings during the month of May at Los Alamitos Race Course

From May 1 through the 31st, the leading Quarter Horse jockey was Jesus Rios Ayala with eight wins from 41 mounts for a winning ratio of 19.5%. His horses also finished in the money 53.7% of the time and he was victorious in the month's richest race, the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity, aboard the unbeaten Chayito Cartel. The two-time defending leading rider at Los Alamitos was also the leader in earnings for the month with $204,311. Erasmo Gasca equaled Rios Ayala with 41 mounts and his seven wins placed him just one win away for the top spot during the month in May. Notably, Gasca's average win odds for the month was an outstanding 17.50 to 1. In comparison, Rios Ayala's has 7 to 1 win odds during that same span. Carlos Huerta and Vinnie Bednar were next in the standings with six victories. Huerta also had 11 runner-up finishes, while Bednar had eight second place finishes. Both jockeys were always finishing near the finish line. A special mention goes to Cody Jensen, who won with five of his seven mounts since May 1 for an outstanding 85.7% winning ratio. Jensen figures to be back aboard a lot of those winners back in the trials to the Ed Burke Million Futurity on Sunday night.

Perennial leading Quarter Horse trainer Paul Jones and top trainer Jose Flores finished the month of May with seven wins each, which is the most in the trainer standings. Jones also led the Quarter Horse standings in earnings with $121,443 while posting a 14.9% win ratio. Meanwhile, Flores won at a solid 17.1% rate last month. Chris O'Dell also had a 17.1% win rate as well in May after winning six races from 35 starters. Scott Willoughby had a strong month as well, winning with 21.4% of his starters while picking up six victories from 28 starters.

Angela Aquino was the meet's leading Thoroughbred trainer in 2017 and she's making another strong run at the title in 2019. Her four wins from 16 starters led the Thoroughbred standings during the month of May and she did so by posting average win odds of 8.70 to 1 with an in-the-money ratio of 50%. Jesus Uranga, Stacy Locke, Jerry Wallace, II, Daniel Azcarate and Chris O'Dell won two Thoroughbred races each last month.

Their purse earnings were nearly identical as well with Bednar's mounts earning $44,615 and Guce's picking up $43,295. Edgar Payers was next with three wins from 19 mounts.
