Los Alamitos Super Derby

Bomb Cyclone, a gelded son of the Favorite Trick (TB) stallion Favorite Cartel racing for Rosenthal Ranch, broke sharply from his rail post and cruised to a 1 1/2-length victory in Sunday's Grade 1, $950,050 Los Alamitos Super Derby at Los Alamitos Racecourse.

Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O'Dell, Bomb Cyclone covered 400 yards in :19.301. The bay gelding earned a 104 speed index and the $399,021 winner's share of the purse from American Quarter Horse racing's richest stakes for 3-year-olds.

"There were some very good horses in there, like (All American Derby winner) A Pollitical Candy V," said O'Dell. "It takes so much luck. We missed last week (with Cyber Attack in the Golden State Million Futurity) by just a little tiny bit. It was our turn this week.

"We got lucky when we drew good because he likes the one hole," the trainer added "He seems to run good down there, and I don't know why. Some horses seem to like the outside. He likes the inside. It's amazing to see him. He hits his stride and just keeps on going."

Bomb Cyclone  was bred in California by Dr. Steve Burns, and the gelding was the fastest qualifier from his three-length victory in the first of five trials on October 15. He was coming off of a fourth-place finish, two lengths behind winner A Pollitical Candy V, in the September 4, $808,538 All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

"As fast as he is, he is fragile in a way," said O'Dell of Bomb Cyclone. "Not to make excuses, but we had a little trouble before the All American Derby. Two or three days before, he got cast in his stall and got a little sore behind. We massaged him and worked on him to where he was good to run."

Bomb Cyclone is out of Remember Me Rose, a multiple graded stakes winning daughter of Corona Cartel and an AQHA Dam of Distinction, and he was purchased by Rosenthal Ranch for $215,000 at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Raced in California and New Mexico, the gelding has won six of nine races, including last year's Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1), and he has earned $1,326,791.

Bomb Cyclone will be pointed to the December 10, 440-yard Champion of Champions (G1).

Scoops Dynasty finished second and was followed by Golden Boi, Apollitical Candy V, Dasha Good Reason, Jess Fire Me, Inspyre, In Hott Pursuit, Corona Yo, and Jess Hez On Fire.
