Since 1992, the American Quarter Horse Association has honored the contributions ranch horses have made to the heritage of the American Quarter Horse by presenting the AQHA Best Remuda Award to honor a ranch for raising outstanding ranch horses. The AQHA Executive Committee recently approved the addition of the AQHA International Best Remuda Award to also recognize an outstanding international ranch remuda composed of registered American Quarter Horses.
To qualify for the award, the ranch must be located outside of the United States, and the AQHA member must have five or more registered American Quarter Horse mares. The mares must be used to produce horses for ranch work and the ranch must breed and register at least five foals annually. For a full list of criteria, view the International Best Remuda Award application.
“The Best Remuda Award is a prestigious award and aids in giving recognition to ranchers who work hard at breeding ranching horses,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “AQHA is proud to present the International Best Remuda Award starting in 2018 to highlight ranches outside of the United States that are producing American Quarter Horses for their use on the ranch.”
An annual international recipient will be selected to receive a specially designed award presented at the Working Ranch Cowboys Association World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo. AQHA will formally announce the AQHA International Best Remuda winner each July.
