Reflecting in a Season of Gratitude
The American Quarter Horse Foundation is committed to giving back to the American Quarter Horse and the people who comprise the Quarter Horse family.

The fall often feels like a time when we are encouraged to slow down and reflect. The days get shorter, the weather grows cooler, and we look forward to opportunities to gather with friends and family and celebrate holidays and some of our industry’s hallmark events. For me, it feels like a time to reflect and feel gratitude for the past year.
Throughout this year, I have watched as horsemen and horsewomen from across the industry have come together to support what they believe in, the horse. At the American Quarter Horse Foundation, we are incredibly lucky to get a front-row seat in witnessing the generosity of you, our membership, and your belief in giving back and making a difference. Whether your passion is supporting youth through scholarships, making a difference for an individual in need through equine assisted activities and therapies, or advancing the ways we care for our equine partners through research, I am consistently overwhelmed by the support that our industry provides through the Foundation.
This year has been particularly meaningful. Not only has it been my first year working with the incredible members of the Board of Trustees, Foundation Council and Foundation Staff as chief officer of the Foundation, it has also been a banner year for many of our programs of impact. This year, we had our largest grant cycles ever for two of our programs, awarding more than $725,000 in scholarships to support education and over $120,000 in grants to support equine assisted activities and therapies. We also worked with the Council and Board of Trustees to create an emergent-need research fund and focus research priorities to ensure we are impacting the horse in the ways that are most needed today. In addition to hosting much-loved programs like America’s Horse in Art and the National Day of the Cowboy, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum expanded its exhibit space to accommodate more unique content. In November, we unveiled the Museum’s first year-long temporary exhibit: Horsemen of the World.
But you don’t need me to tell you about the impact we are able to create because of the generosity of our donors. You can hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. Earlier this year, we launched our “This is Who We Are” video series, where individuals who have been impacted by Foundation programming get to tell you their story, in their words. The first video featured Dr. Jessica Leatherwood of Texas A&M University, who shared how her journey through education and early career was impacted by the Foundation’s scholarship and research programs. We debuted our second video at the Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show in November, and gave show goers a chance to feel the impact of our equine assisted activities and therapies program.
So as I break out my sweaters in preparation for winter, I reflect and I am grateful. I am grateful for your generosity. I am grateful that your love for the American Quarter Horse has helped the Foundation create impact for the horse and for our American Quarter Horse family. I am grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead for our Foundation and our industry. If you haven’t enacted your charitable spirit through the Foundation yet, join us in making dreams come true.
Thank you, Happy Holidays and best wishes for the year to come!
