The AQHA writing and design team captures awards in American Horse Publications 2018 contest.

The American Quarter Horse Journal won the general excellence category. This cover, in particular, earned an honorable mention.

The AQHA Media team received 21 awards June 16 during the annual seminar of American Horse Publications, a professional improvement organization for equine publishers.

The American Quarter Horse Journal and Ranch Horse Journal each earned general excellence awards in their circulation categories. Larri Jo Starkey and Andrea Caudill edit the magazines, respectively. America’s Horse magazine, edited by Holly Clanahan, received an honorable mention in its general excellence category.

The Journal team received a first-place award for “Perseverance,” editorial event coverage of the 2017 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. Freelancer Abigail Boatwright’s yearlong Journal series, “Equine ER,” won editorial series. The horse-care article “Deworming Without Dust,” by freelancer Lindsay Keller, won for its appearance in the May 2017 issue of America’s Horse. Freelance illustrator Jean Abernethy won the editorial illustration award for “Saying Goodbye,” which appeared in the March 2017 Journal. 

Graphic designer David Brown won second in single advertisement for his creation for the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. Graphic designer Lucy Jimenez was second for her editorial design work on“Is That Legal?” for the Ranch Horse Journal. 

Journal columnist Pamela Britton Baer placed second with her personal column single article “Fashion Forwarded.” Also earning second-place honors were Performance Horse Journal freelancer Breanne Hill’s instructional single article “The Domino Effect” and Boatwright’s “You’re Hired!” featured in the Winter 2017 Ranch Horse Journal.

Boatwright’s “Angel Horse,” depicting a human-animal bond in America’s Horse, and “Sheath Cleaning 101,” an instructional article with Dr. Amy Armentrout in the Journal, both placed third. Also finishing third in their categories were freelancer Julie Johnson Bryant’s service-to-the-consumer article “Higher Ground” for the Performance Horse Journal and Keller’s horse-care article “Count Your Eggs Before They Hatch,” which appeared in America’s Horse. Ranch Horse Journal’s editorial photograph “Neither Snow or Rain” by freelance photographer Chris Dickinson claimed third, as did the magazine’s Winter 2017 cover, featuring an image by editor Caudill.

Jimenez’s graphic design, combined with freelance photographer Nicole Poyo’s image, for the November 2017 Journal cover earned an honorable mention. Also earning honorable mentions were the human-animal bond article “My AQHA Story” by AQHA member and exhibitor Andrea James for the Journal, personality profile “Living in Utopia” by Ranch Horse Journal Editor Caudill and the America’s Horse feature “Mission Critical” by freelancer Lane S. Karney.
